My name is Gabby Wohlford and I am fundraising for Emerald School of Excellence, a nonprofit recovery high school based in Charlotte, NC. I have been volunteering at Emerald School for a little over a year and I have been a staff member there since March 2020.

The Youth Recovery Movement is close to my heart because of my own high school experience. High school is a difficult time for many, but especially adolescents experiencing mental health struggles and substance use. The impact of my mental health and substance use on my attendance and motivation kept me from reaching my own potential as an adolescent.

While working at Emerald School this year, I have personally witnessed just how much this organization is positively impacting my community every day. Providing an individualized, self-paced education in a recovery-friendly and supportive environment for youth with substance use disorders has the power to transform futures. Recovery high schools are able to strengthen the continuum of care for youth, creating greater opportunities for sustained, long-term recovery. It is paramount that we, as a community, value this early intervention tool for youth with substance use disorder.
