Our reason for becoming involved with the Emerald School of Excellence (ESE) nearly 3 years ago has only been affirmed and strengthened since it opened in September 2019.
Our son, Justin, lost his battle with Substance Use Disorder in 2004 at the age of 22. From an early age, Justin experimented with a variety of substances, showed signs of depression, and exhibited behavioral issues. He was in and out of inpatient and outpatient rehab programs and a variety of school settings. It seemed like he was constantly in transition and school was pretty much a nightmare. Often, he would return to or be sent to new school environments where he had access to drugs and alcohol or where school staff did not feel equipped to deal with his significant issues. If Justin had been able to attend a recovery high school perhaps things could have been different.
Since Justin’s death we had been searching for a way to honor his memory and at the same time help other young people with similar struggles. The Emerald School seemed like it might be the perfect fit.
The students say it all in the video below as they share what the Emerald School means for them and their sobriety.

With the tools and support ESE provides we know that these young people and others that attend the school in the years ahead will thrive and have bright futures!
If you have a young person in your family or know of a family with a young person struggling with substance use, please consider donating any amount large or small to the Emerald School. Thank you and remember, your donation could “Just Save One”!
